Positron Acquires Aktino - Pioneer of MIMO on DMT

MONTREAL, May 13, 2009 – Continuing the expansion of its fiber optic transmission, Ethernet and Access product portfolio, Positron, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has acquired Aktino Inc., the developer of carrier class MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) over Discrete Multitone (DMT) bonded copper solutions. This technology delivers very cost effective long-reach and high-bandwidth Ethernet and DS3 services over copper infrastructure with the same reliability as fiber infrastructure.

“Aktino’s MIMO-DMT technology and products are deployed by major carriers to deliver fiber-like SLA’s,” explains Claude Brisson, COO of Positron Inc. “By leveraging existing copper infrastructure, the Aktino solution enables carriers to deploy Ethernet and DS3 services faster while obtaining fiber-like bandwidth on a copper budget.”

“Positron has been a market leader in providing high quality reliable telecommunication solutions for over 35 years with long-standing relationships with RBOCs, independent telephone companies and carriers in North America and globally,” says Hossam Salib Co-Founder of Aktino. “Positron’s technical and corporate strength, and experience in developing critical applications such as 911 systems and optical transport platforms, are key for the continued development, support and growth of the Aktino copper bonding MIMO on DMT products.”

The Aktino MIMO-DMT solution has superior rate, reach and reliable performance versus legacy and other bonded-copper solutions. It extends reliable high bandwidth over a Carrier Service Area (CSA), providing a cost effective and extended Ethernet service footprint for the carriers. Aktino products deliver five to 100 Mbps Carrier Ethernet and DS3 TDM solutions, making them ideal for applications by providing Ethernet services for Business, DSLAM backhaul and cell site backhaul applications.

“Our customers require the flexibility to deploy fiber, copper, SONET/SDH or packet-based solutions when building today’s networks to deliver converged voice and Ethernet services. The Aktino acquisition adds a world-leading technology and product solution to Positron’s Access portfolio and combines two strong teams to better address our customers’ challenges,” concludes Brisson.

The Aktino division will continue to operate from its California location.

About Aktino
Aktino provides carrier-class bonded copper solutions that enable ILECs to quickly respond to customer hunger for bandwidth by leveraging in-place copper loop infrastructure. Aktino invented MIMO-on-DMT technology for the copper loop environment because of its superiority over Legacy and E.SHDSL approaches. This gives ILECs the ability to defer fiber deployment investments and increase their broadband service revenues at much lower cost. Founded in 2003, Aktino products are deployed worldwide for the transport of DS3 and high speed Ethernet.

About Positron
Founded in 1970, Positron Inc, a member of the Metro Ethernet Forum, develops and manufactures fiber optic transmission equipment for access, metro and core transport networks. Positron is the developer of the OSIRIS products sold world-wide, which it re-acquired. Its portfolio also includes Pseudowire & Ethernet over PDH terminals and aggregators offering an extensive solution set for access, backhaul and aggregation of business, wireless and triple-play services.
